- 7. The cut strips are placed into cardboard secondary packs and are sometimes supplied with an applicator. Compression Compression is appropriate for heat-sensitive drugs or/and excipients which would degrade at the high temperat ures used in the moulding method. The compression method involves the following steps: 1.Suppository base and drug(s) are mixed and heated simultaneously to produce a soft paste. High-shear mixers are required to ensure homogeneous mixing of the viscous paste. 2.The paste is forced through a cylinder to fill the preformed packaging. The level of automation and scale of manufacturing differ significantly in machines from different manufacturers Suppositories are packed individually in plastic (PVC) or aluminium foil strip packs.. Packaging material which is impermeable to moisture and oxygen is chosen for drugs that are prone to hydrolysis. Vaginal films Solvent casting involves the following steps: 1. The active ingredient is either dissolved or dispersed in a solution of a water- soluble polymer (e.g.polyethylene oxide, polyviny Ipyrrolidone, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) in an appropriate solvent. 2. A plasticizer (such as PEG, propylene glycol, or glycerol) added to the viscous solution, as it enhances the mechanical strength and flexibility of the film. 3. The liquid mixture is cast and then dried . The thickness of the cast film and the drying conditions (time and temperature) must be monitored. 4. The dried film is cut to strips of the required size; these are then packaged individually in blister packs or sachets. When organic solvents are used in the process, solvent residues in the dried films must be measured and controlled to ensure they are within safe limits.
