And so my apartment was often full of people coming and going, crammed with additional desks and beds for short-term stays . This fascination is what's on display here-a sort of audiovideo collage that explores the roots of Monk's concert, of Monk himself, and of the ties that bind his music to Moran's own path to jazz. 16 The music of many avant-garde composers stretches the bounds of what most of us think music is. Going beyond the use of melody and harmony, and even beyond the use of instruments.these composers use recordings of found objects in the world such as jackhammers , trains. and waterfalls . They edit the recordings, play with their pitch, and ultimately combine them into an organized collage of sound with the same type of emotional trajectory-the same tension and release-as traditional music. Composers in this tradition are like the painters who stepped outside the boundaries of representational and realistic art the cubists, the Dadaists, many of the modern painters from Picasso to Kandinsky. The food sustains them and their chick until the fledgling is ready to fly. I burrow deeper and listen to the wind grow to a whine. I think of the six plane rides it took to get here -Jackson to Salt Lake to Dallas to Santiago to Punta Arenas to Patriot Hills to Vinson. In a few weeks , we'll retrace our journey back to warmer climes . And when we get home. we'll share photos and stories and brag about our ability to survive in this stark, inhospitable place. Sam Brawner . the drummer., and Atiba Taylor, the sax player, have played with him for three and four years, respectively and Bruce Robinson . the keyboardist has played with him for 15. 10 Mohamed Fawzy -SAT & ACT English Speak the words "ice age," and the mind turns to Cro- Magnon mammoth hunters on windswept European plains devoid of trees. But the Little Ice Age (approximately A.D. 1300-1850) was far from a deep freeze . The seesaw brought cycles of intensely cold winters and easterly winds, then switched abruptly to years of heavy spring and early summer rains, mild winters . and frequent Atlantic storms, or to periods of droughts , light northeasterly winds, and summer heat waves that baked growing corn fields under a shimmering haze. The Little Ice Age was an endless zigzag of climatic shifts, few lasting more than a quarter century Today's prolonged warming is an anomaly. 9 The main point of this paragraph is that: A) Holmes often has to alter his musical style based on which band members are available to play a gig.
